Depot Poster

This is the final poster for the depot design project. In the depot design , it adaptive reused old depot to the gallery, studio, and residence area for the artist. The entire project reflects the concept idea, which is from the photo of bench. Some places show the pattern and modular design that reflects the concept idea. Moreover, the entire space is detailed considered about the accessibility, and people with visual difficulty, also Egress requirement.
"Sense of the place" is the base idea for me to design the adaptive reused depot. The entire space reflects the ideas of contrast, unity, dominant, variety, and harmony. One of the most important principles for the project is harmony. The harmony influenced the color, materials, form, and place. The beauty of harmony with the generation between old and new expresses the idea of "Sense of the place."

STIR Competition Poster

In this adaptive reused project for a local artist, the design reuses the historical depot for a residence, studio, and gallery. The gallery space design is the best design to express the concept of balance, dominant, and harmony. The gallery space uses Sherwin-Williams Show Stopper, Stolen Kiss, Indigo, Cut the Mustard, Peppercorn, and Origami White to create a triadic color scheme. These colors are  frequently used by the artist in the art creating harmony between the artworks and interior space. Moreover, the strongly Sherwin-Williams Cut the Mustard color wall, in the entrance, represents the idea of the dominant. The design focuses on “Sense of the place”, and retaining the feeling of the historic depot. Finally, the Origami White color created balance between other colors in the space. Altogether, the color use of this gallery design successfully reflects the idea of balance, dominant, and harmony.

Process Work

This is the process work for the depot design. At the beginning, I tried to identify the concept and thinking about how to use the concept idea on my project. After that, I tried to do the bubble diagram and matrix for distinguish the space. Then, I started to design the actual space. Beside of the design space, I also design the bench and fire place with the concept idea: dominant, repetition and harmony. For example, the bench used the repetition for the circular form seating, and dominant metal frame in the center, and the material is harmony with the entire depot space. I think the process work is not less important than final work, these works are important to organize the designer's thinking.

Depot Model

This is the model for depot design project. People can understand the space and the ceiling height easily through the model. In the model, I add many specific feature for my design. For example, the movable wall; I used wire in that wall, so it can really move. Also, I add the entrance wall that used the pattern design. Thus, these features can make people feel the space well.

Pattern design

For my pattern design, I enlarged my original pattern that shows in last post. Through this pattern, it expresses the idea of dominant, repetition, and harmony. In the pattern design, I do not want it become too busy, and I want a strong, and powerful idea through the pattern. Also, the simple monochromatic color scheme make the unity for the entire design. So, people can see the pattern with entire, not individual.

Concept model

The concept model is a strong objects that reflect the idea of the object I choose as my concept. In this model, it incorporate most of ideas of the elements and principles. The centered black board represents the idea of movement from close to far, and the dominant feeling. The wood sticks represent straight line, unity, and repetition. Moreover, the coils represents the idea of curved line, and also the idea of unity and repetition. One more things that is represented by all these three is variety. These three parts are different materials, so in here I used the materials to express the idea of variety. Therefore, the concept model strongly represents the idea of the objects as well as the modular and pattern by incorporating the principles and elements.

Concept modular and pattern

For my pattern design, I focused on the 3 concept: dominant, repetition, and harmony. In the first picture, it shows my modular, which is reflected the idea of the concept. And in the second image, it expresses the final modular that I chose. The black center line shows the idea of dominant; the red curved lines shows the idea of repetition; and the combination with the strong straight line and curved line creates the beautiful harmony. Moreover, the third pattern is created by combination of the modular. I put these modular in the circular form and show the idea of dominant, repetion, and harmony stronger. Also, the circular form creates the beautiful focus point on the pattern.

Extra Credit: Lecture by Mike Jobes

In the lecture, which was did by Mike Jobes, he talked about “Future primitive”. This is the idea for design the sustainable community. Mike Jobes has been lead designer and project manger on a civic and community project since joining Miller Hull.  In his lecture, he talked about a lot project or idea that he did or felt. These entire things he talked is very interesting, but there are four things from his lecture strongly attracts me: the Unfinished skyscraper, the combination of the old and new, the strip mall, and the habitat house of the immediate future.
First of all, I got a strong impact from the story of people are leaving at the unfinished skyscraper. In this skyscraper, there is no window, doors, finishes, and also elevator. So, residents made their own window, connect the water and electrical by themselves. There is no any concept of the skyscraper. We learned the skyscraper in the Arch202 lecture; it said the skyscraper is the symbol of the power, dominant, and status. In that skyscraper, there is no power, not dominant, not wealthy, but it still is the part of the community. Thus, I am wondering why is the skyscraper still can be the part of the community even there is no meaning as the skyscraper. Mike said the skyscraper became a part of the new economy, and part of the new city. Because it still located on the good position of the city so residents can get their job easier, also it is cheap, so it can provide the room for homeless people. In the video we saw during the lecture, one of the resident said “he loves this skyscraper”.
Next, he talked about the concept of using the old things in the new world, so it means the combination of the old and new. Today, in United States and most of the culture, people love new thing, and they do not want to use the old things. But they do not know how old things are cool, beautiful, and fashionable. Don't you think it would be super cool if you use the 80s’ car in today? I love it. For example, in Italy, which is one of the most fashionable countries in the world, they prefer to live at old house. In Italy, higher rent for old house and cheaper rent for new house. This idea is not just for cool, the most important things for this are “green”. The best way for construct sustainable and green building is “do not construct”. It means “reuse” or keep use the old building. Thus, we do not need new materials; we do not need spend extra energy for constructing. Thus I think use the old thing in today’s world would be a very cool thing.
Moreover, he talks about the project he did for the competition with the strip mall. The general idea for the competition is design the strip mall to be “green”.  In his lecture, he said he loves strip mall because he loves the feeling. In the Arch202 lecture, we learned about the “Mall”. It said strip mall became less popular, and the covered huge entertainment mall becomes more poplar because people do not need to care about the weather, also it has more shops more choice, and fun. However, strip mall still have some better parts, such as convenient, familiar, and sustainable. In Mike’s design, he put the plants roof to cover entire mall, so it can resist the weather change, also it goes green because these plants provide the effect like sky garden. Also, it can keep the rain water, and reuse these rain water for the plants and other facilities, so it creates a very sustainable system.
Altogether, I think Mike gives me a very big impact of my idea of design. It gives me a lot of new knowledge.  I think I would consider about how the building relate the people and environment, how the old things can adapt to today, and how can design the sustainable system for my future projects.

Client Belief

Keke Cribbs is one of the most famous artists that use glass to create artworks. She interest in Buddhist philosophies, and this is one of the most impact element for her artworks and creativity. She usually likes to use flat glass to create three-dimension glass artwork and decorates with fired enamels. She started this style since 1995 because she likes to paint on glass and cut the painting into parts for mosaics and create sculpture, also she thinks her galleries were not interested in showing two-dimensional works. Moreover, she also likes to use mixed media on her art works. In recently, she started to create wood sculpture with fabrics, metals, mirror, glass, papers, pearls, and etc.

According to her interviews from website and artworks, she prefers antique style, not modern style for her gallery, studio, and residence. For her studio, she does not need blow molding machine, but she needs sandblast machine for her glass arts because she create her glasswork from flat glass. Moreover, she need sewing machine, metal cutter, and at least 3 separate working space with basic equipment for cutting, drawing, and painting.  In the gallery, she needs both pedestals and hanging walls, because she is doing both sculpture and paint, also in the gallery space, it would be better to use soft warm color light, not strong white spot light. The natural light also can be a good light source for showing her art works. In the residence, she does not need a huge space, because the house is only for her.

Her art-style fits on this adaptive reuse of historic building, which is the project that we are doing. She like the antique style, and her art works is also antique style. Thus, in the design of the interior, the building can keep it old style; have not to change a lot of the atmosphere.  Only things that will be changing are the entire space will use the Universal design, and friendly for visual disability and accessibility people such as use the strong contrast color, and wheelchair accessible. Once this information is researched and gathered, the greater the possibility for functional success within the design.

Habitat for Humanity

This house designed for Habitat of Humanity represents Convenience, Communication, and Function.First of all, the simple rectangular shape plan is easy to build and will cost less to construct. The simple plan also allows for a simple and beautiful roof design. Moreover, the entire plan, include the landscape, is detailed considered for people who will live in this house such as dividing private and commercial space, room and furniture arrangement, and energy efficiency strategies. Thus, this house is convenient for both construction and living. Next, the house considers family communication by creating a great opened and connected space in the living, dining and kitchen area. There is also a large, and wonderful family space in the both front and backyard. High ceilings in the living room create a feeling of the spaciousness. Last, functional of the space using and the plumbing system is the biggest challenging for design this house. The size of the house is not big, so it was hard to arrange the space with the energy efficient. Altogether, this house is successfully shows Convenience, Communication, and Function through space arrangement and energy efficiency.

Context Poster

In this assignment, my case-study for the reuse building is Pullman depot. It was the oldest depot in Pullman, and it supported people's life in Pullman at that time very much. Most of foods and sources for people's life was carried by the train. However, through the times going, Pullman does not need the depot because the technologies improve, people can use track and airplane to carry stuff faster and easier.
But, people in Pullman do not want to destroy their depot even it was useless, because it is the evident for Pullman's history, so it became the License department. The interesting part is, the License department still keep the feeling of the old depot, we can see the depot in the License department today. Therefore, in my next projects which is built the artist studio and residents in the depot, I want to keep the feeling of the old depot, but also a good space for the artist.
